The organizational meeting of the Uncompahgre Group of the Sierra Club occurred on
23 January 1985. Eighteen individuals were present. The geographical area to be served
by the group was agreed upon as Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and west Garfield Counties.
Officers elected were Chairperson – Mark Pearson; Vice-chair – Ray Gronwall; Secretary/Treasurer
– Danni Langdon; Outings Chair – Sharyl Kinnear; and Co-conservation Chairs Paul
Peterson and Bill Lewis. Our budget was set at approximately $300. Membership in
May of 1986 was 166.
Early projects focused on the improvement of local air quality, attendance at hearings
regarding Canyonlands as a candidate for the nation’s nuclear waste dump, lobbying
for the designation of BLM wilderness study areas, and the preparation of a citizens’
alternative to the BLM’s then-recently released Grand Junction Area RMP/EIS.
