Rocky Mountain Chapter - Colorado

Rachel Carson Group

Northwest Denver and Jefferson County

Welcome!

The Rachel Carson Group of the Sierra Club

The Rachel Carson Group comprises much of Jefferson County and the northwest part of the Denver area - Arvada, Broomfield, Golden, Green Mountain, Lakewood, Thornton, Wheat Ridge and part of Westminster. Issues that our group is currently addressing include; the loss of open space, sprawl, over population, national parks, mass transportation and the proposed beltway through Golden.

"The more clearly we can focus our attention on
the wonders and realities of the universe about us,
the less taste we shall have for destruction."
                                    - Rachel Carson, 1907 - 1964

  • Hike

    Date: September 13, 2008 (Saturday)

Trailhead Meeting Time: To be announced by leader...

Where: Barr Trail - from Manitou Springs to Barr Camp and back again (takes us half way up Pikes Peak). This is one of Roger's favorite's that he repeats a few times each year. However, it's still a very Strenuous hike so be prepared for a difficult day at 14 Miles roundtrip and 3,500+ feet of elevation gain (Barr Camp is at 10,200 feet). This is not an easy hike, you can expect at least 6 hours of fast and continuous walking to complete the trip!

Bring: Ten Essentials, cold weather gear, suitable footwear, and instep crampons in case there's still some snow or ice accumulation along the trail (usually there's some along the first part and then further up in the shaded portions nearing the cabin...). We'll stop for lunch at the cabin where they usually serve hot chocolate and soup (but bring some of your own food, just in case!).

    Participants: Miminum 4, maximum 10.

    Leader: Roger J. Wendell, 303-859-1644

    email: roger.wendell_@_rmc.sierraclub.org (remove my anti-spam "_" underscores...)

October '06 was a great month for your humble RCG webmaster! In addition to attending Greg Casini's farewell dinner, at Denver's Las Delicias restaurant (Angela Medberry, Mike Mueller, Mark Collier, Roger Singer, JoLynn Jarboe, Jason Wells, and a bunch of others were there as well!), I was also able to visit the birthplace of Sierra Club founder John Muir while on a road trip around Scotland!  And, equally special, I also had the good fortune of interviewing Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope for an October 31st broadcast at Boulder/Denver radio station KGNU.

Executive Committee

No Northwest 470 Freeway/Tollroad!
At our September 27, 2005 ExCom meeting we voted to take a position against the proposed
superhighway through Golden, Arvada, and Wheat Ridge. It is agreed that the creation of such highways
destroys open space, wastes resources, and promotes sprawl and unwanted population increases...

Who was Rachel Carson?

Rachel Carson was born in 1907 on a farm in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She graduated from what is now Chatham College and then earned a Masters Degree in Marine Biology at Johns Hopkins University. Rachel Carson taught Zoology at the University of Maryland and eventually took a job with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. While working for the government she wrote a number of books that gave her the financial independence to quit her position and begin work on her most famous book.

That book, Silent Spring, was published in 1962 and was a major influence in helping people understand the damage pesticides and chemicals are doing to our health and environment. In 1992, a panel of distinguished Americans declared Silent Spring the most influential book of the past 50 years. Sadly, Rachel Carson died in 1964 of a cancer that may have been caused by exposure to the very environmental carcinogens she had been studying...
