THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR PIKES PEAK

Please read the July 1997 Chair’s Corner first.

So, now you know more about the critical juncture at which we find ourselves in regards to Pikes Peak. You may ask (and we hope you do!), "How can I help?" There are a number of ways:

LEARN MORE ABOUT PIKES PEAK, ITS PROBLEMS AND ITS WONDERS—

This summer, get involved in "Celebrate Pikes Peak" presented by Friends of the Peak and co-sponsored by the Pikes Peak Group, Sierra Club and other local groups. (See enclosed flier.)

Discover for yourself the serious, long-standing environmental damage being done by improper management of the Pikes Peak Highway. Join us for our July 19 field trip, or take the drive yourself, stopping to observe as you go. For a real test, compare the near-road destruction on Pikes Peak with Mt. Evans Highway, Trail Ridge Road, or Guanella Pass in your summer travels.

PARTICIPATE IN GOVERNMENTAL DECISION-MAKING ABOUT PIKES PEAK—

The City of Colorado Springs will soon be sending a long-overdue erosion control plan for the Pikes Peak Highway to the US Forest Service for review in an Environmental Assessment (EA). Call the Pikes Peak Ranger District, USFS, at 636-1602 and request to be put on the mailing list for the EA.

If you are or know someone with civil engineering or municipal finance experience who can help with technical review during the EA process and beyond, call Jim Lockhart, Group Secretary, at 385-0045.

Write or call the Mayor and City Council (at 30 S. Nevada, 80903, 578-6600) to express your concerns about proper stewardship of Pikes Peak.

HELP OUR GROUP IN ITS PIKES PEAK FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES—

The Pikes Peak Group is raising funds to promote action in three critical areas: 1) Public Information and Public Participation; 2) Negotiation; and, 3) possible Litigation (should it be necessary). All of these items are potentially costly.

Watch for notices of fund-raising events in the coming weeks and months—and please attend! Your participation is critical.

Volunteers are needed to help organize fund-raising events. If you can help or have questions, please call Jim Lockhart at 719-385-0045.

A small group of Sierrans have established an $1800 Pikes Peak Defense Fund and are seeking contributions to match or exceed that total. Your donation can help meet these challenge grants. For details, call Jim Lockhart at (719) 385-0045 (Colorado Springs) or John Stansfield at (303) 660-5849 (Denver metro).
