ATVs that aren't licensed are illegal on Forest Service and other dirt/unimproved roads that aren't specifically posted allowing them.. Even in areas that have been set aside for them they are only allowed on roads and trails but many people seem to think it is their right to drive their ATV when and where they please. Used in fragile areas they can quickly cause damage that accelerates erosion and spoils the beauty of the place for all who follow. These pictures were taken in early April on the road to Mt Herman from Monument. This kind of abuse must be stopped before all the accessible areas of the forest are ruined like this.
Here the No Motor Vehicles sign is pretty much useless and erosion has already
started.
Even putting cables across the area does little good as the whole road would have to have cables on both sides of it.
And the damage doesn't stop with just soil erosion.
