Rocky Mountain Chapter - Colorado

Welcome

Blue River Group

Representing environmentalists in Summit, Eagle, and Grand Counties

 ;
Global Warming, Climate Chaos, Climate Change, Climate Alterations ........

While the effect of human activity on the global climate is hotly debated, physical signs of environmental change are all around us.

Some scientists say an increase in the rate of melting of the world's glaciers is evidence of global warming.

Argentina's Upsala Glacier was once the biggest in South America, but it is now disappearing at a rate of 200 metres per year.

Other scientists say its reduction is due to complicated shifts in glacial dynamics and local geology.

With all the issues we face in the high country of Colorado, the most urgent is wise response to global climate change at the local level.

Some of our local municipalities and county governments have signed on as members of the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization. We would like to see local governments commit to reducing carbon in the atmosphere by joining the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (IClEI) Climate Protection Program.

Vail Resorts is leading the way. We applaud CEO Rob Katz for offsetting 100 percent of Vail Resorts total electricity use by purchasing wind energy for its operations.

    The challenges/problems and focus for the Blue River Group include:

    • Rapid growth and development in our high mountain towns
    • White River National Forest policies and plans
    • Major ski areas in Colorado: Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, Beaver Creek, Winter Park and more
    • Many old mining sites leaching toxic metals into our water.
    • We receive more precipitation than any where else in Colorado, but most of our water is used by front range cities and Eastern Colorado agriculture.
